1868 and 1872 PRESIDENTIAL
ELECTION VOTE COUNTS
(but Grant lost Clermont County!)

On May 19, 1868, Grant was unanimously nominated as the Republican candidate for President of the United States at their convention which took place in Chicago.

Grant and his Vice-Presidential running mate, Schuyler Colfax of Indiana, received 3,015,071 popular votes and 214 Electoral votes compared to Democrats Horatio Seymour of New York and Preston Blair, Jr. of Missouri with 2,709,615 popular votes and 80 electoral votes. There were 37 states, 23 electoral votes were not counted…

In Clermont County, Grant lost to Seymour 3,594 to 3,475. The breakdown by township, with Grant's total listed first, was: Batavia (376-326), Franklin (283-398), Goshen (201-215), Jackson (180-171), Miami (366-287), his birthplace township of Monroe (198-213), Ohio (347-273), Pierce (140-217), Stonelick (200-211), Tate (291-301), Union (147-289), Washington (272-234), Wayne (134-231), and Williamsburg (340-138).

The Republican National Convention of 1872 took place in Philadelphia and Grant was re-nominated with a new running mate, Henry Wilson of Massachusetts. They received 3,597,132 popular votes and 286 electoral votes compared to Democrats Horace Greeley of New York and Gratz Brown of Missouri with 2,834,125 popular votes and 47 electoral votes. Again there were 37 states voting, and 63 electoral votes were scattered among six other candidates.

Again, in Clermont County, Grant was defeated. He received 3,408 votes and Greeley received 3,658. The breakdown by township with Grant listed first, was: Batavia (324-314), Franklin (308-407), Goshen (181-191), Jackson (168-171), Miami (363-369), Monroe (195-215), Ohio (398-303), Pierce (132-250), Stonelick (168-214), Tate (282-270), Union (126-256), Washington (288-305), Wayne (148-251), and Williamsburg (327-152).
